A Long And Winding Road: Supplies For Collections

hm_logo2.gif

Looking for a company that can make things easier when it comes to cataloging and displaying your collection?

In my case I was looking for archive framing for some original comic art. Having gone to traditional framing stores I found myself discouraged; the prices were inflated and even with the artwork in front of them the sales staff didn't understand what it was I really needed.

Bags Unlimited was a different story. Located in Rochester, NY, the company does a brisk online business but if you are in the area you can drop by the store for more personal service. The staff is informed in not just comic archiving but all kinds of supplies for the serious collector whether said collection is made up of comic books, postcards, trading cards, or coins.

Witchblade To Big Screen

With Wanted heading to the big screen in June it seems Top Cow decided to sell yet another of their flagship titles to Hollywood. Variety is reporting that Witchblade will be headed to the big screen.

Considering the industry's track record with comic book adaptions featuring female leads I am going to remain cautiously optimistic.

Iron Man Destroys Box Office: Sequel, Avengers Movie Follow

marvel-avengers.gif
Considering the weekend box office for Iron Man($98.6 million dollars) , it is no surprise that Marvel has announced a sequel to the mega hit. But Marvel isn't only relying on Iron Man and the Hulk to put money in their pockets. Adding to the sequels' scheduled 2010 release there will be a entire slate of other Marvel properties.

USA TODAY is reporting we can expect solo films from Thor, Captain America, and Ant-Man to join Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk on the big screen. In July 2011 all this solo action will lead to an Avengers film.

Anyone who sat through the credits of Iron Man can't be surprised by an Avengers project but I am curious as to the box office draw of solo Thor and Ant-Man projects.

And what about the budget for an Avengers project? With Downey, Jackson, and Norton sure to be on board they better hope they go the 'unknown' route to round out the team.

NYC Comic Con: Buffy Tarot Cards

Buffy-Tarot-Magician_sm.gif
Dark Horse announced at this weekend's New York Comic Con that in August they are releasing an official Buffy tarot set. Comicbookresources.com has an interview with the card deck's designer, Rachel Pollack, and Buffy cover artist Paul Lee.

Along with the "Conversations with Dead People" Board it seems Dark Horse is finding some interesting ways to develop additional merchandise tie-ins.

The glorified Ouija Board holds no appeal to me but from an artistic stand point the cards are unique (and a little bit naughty). They certainly seem to be getting Buffy fan and Pink is the new Blog writer, Trent excited.

Thoughts?

NYC Comic Con: Catwoman Taking A Nap

catwoman.gif

It would seem that all the faith i was putting into an improved Catwoman title is for nothing. A friend called me this afternoon, and Newsarama is confirming, that Catwoman is soon no longer having her own book.

Now if this makes it so Catwoman can leap over to play with the Secret Six sign me up but otherwise I am sad to see this book go.

NYC Comic Con: Simone Brings Back the Six

It would seem there is news about another title with some LGBT representation. This time from DC Comics.

Gail Simone spoke with Newsarama about a new ongoing Secret Six series. Not only is it revealed who will be drawing the series (color me excited) but there are some hints as to what characters will be rounding out the team.

NYC Comic Con: Newsarama Info On Runaways

Staffofone.gif

News is starting to come in from this weekend's Comic Con in NYC. The folks at Newsarama have an interview with Terry Moore regarding his run on Marvel's Runaways.

My only question is - why do publishers insist on starting books over with new #1's all the time?

Hulk Film Tussle Continues

hulk-mad.gif
One of the best blogs about the Hollywood machine is Nikki Finke's deadlinehollywooddaily.com. It is filled with all kinds of insider information regarding the business behind the media we all eat up.

Today the blog reports on the continuing battle behind the scenes on the newest Hulk film staring Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, and Tim Roth.

Some background on this is that the film's star, Edward Norton, is also writing it and was given a great deal of creative input into the project. I had the pleasure of seeing Norton and Tyler at last year's San Diego Comic Con and thought he spoke very enthusiastically about what his screenplay to the Hulk would bring to the table. He spoke with such passion and knowledge about the characters and the story that it immediately made me confident that we weren't about to see another Catwoman or Daredevil.

In the end Marvel had other ideas. Finke is now reporting that the issues have been settled but "what people will see is Marvel's cut of the movie. ....not the Edward Norton cut by any means."

Personally, I get why Marvel's new film division is nervous. Although I enjoyed Ang Lee's stab at the superhero many other filmgoers didn't.

There is enough animosity about comic to film adaptions already and the last thing the trend needs is another stinker. If all Hulk does is smash and all the heart is left out of the project my prediction is that the film will open as big as the Hulk himself and then quickly fade away.

What Have You Got For Us?

Doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that we here at Pink Kryptonite can't be everywhere at once. So if any readers out there are hitting the Con this weekend in NYC we are looking for scoop. Breakout those internet enabled cellphones and keep those of us unable to attend in the loop.

If something peeks your interest (panel news, word from the convention floor, or photographic proof of Spiderman being a menace to society) drop a line to our fearless editor and he will make sure to share it with the world.

Goblin already gave everyone the lowdown on NY Comic Con and Pink Kryptonite will be attending to give our readers updates throughout the weekend.

Maybe you're asking yourself what's in it for a gay comic fan looking for some gay content at the Con? Well, we recently heard from the folks at Prism Comics. Although they don't have a booth on the convention floor they are involved in a couple of events this weekend.

This Saturday, Ariel Schrag will be talking about and signing her first book, Awkward and Definition. For further details look - here.

Sunday, Ivan Velez, Jr. will be presenting a panel on "Gays In Comics...". For further details check things out - here.

The Week In Review: April 7th - April 13th

orangereview.jpg
Is it really Monday - AGAIN!?

Seems another week has come and gone but not without some fun at the PK lair. In case you missed any of it, here's a chance to catch up.

  • We learned that people at NBC's Deal or No Deal, have their fingers on the pulse of one Marvel fan's dream.
  • Jonostarsmore talked comics and LGBT with Prism Comics founding president and creator of the erotic gay thriller Mark of Aeacus, Charles "Zan" Christensen. They had so much too talk about - there was a second part.
  • Goblin gave some insight into Fantastic Four (vol. 2) in The DVD Shop.

What will this week hold? That's anyone's guess.

A Long And Winding Road: Mile High Comics Denver

IMG_0306.gif

Denver, Colorado is just about my favorite city in the country and not just because there are four franchised comic shops with in a decently drivable distance from downtown. I recently had the pleasure of visiting two of Mile High Comics four stores. Sadly, I didn't get to make the trip to their Megastore in Thornton, Colorado but the two stores I did manage to visit had a pleasant staff in well-organized layouts.

The first store I checked out was in Littleton, Colorado. Lynn Moulton, the stores owner, offered up help locating a first printing of Angel: After the Fall #4. After a moment or two I had the issue my local store didn't. When one finds a book they can't locate at home it's a successful visit.

If you aren't familiar with that area of Littleton please keep your eyes peeled. Although Broadway itself is an easy street to find the store is tucked into a plaza that you might not catch at first pass (at least I didn't).

The second store I dropped in on was the one in downtown Denver and it was a very easy find. Located on the second floor of a plaza that is right on South Colorado Blvd, I could see it about three or four blocks before I got there.

The downtown location is lacking in nothing a true comic book fan would need. Had I not found everything I was looking for at the Littleton location I could have easily done so here. Since I had what I needed I spent most of my time looking over the toys and t-shirts and somehow managed to be kind to my wallet, opting not to make a purchase.

From what I gather from their website Mile High Comics does a good online business as well. So for those folks looking for a comprehensive online retailer they might be worth a look.

"Oh Lois, you SO don't want to know!"
